CSI'S BIG BOLD CAMPAIGN

Let's Make the Northwest

THE  National Leader

in Clean Manufacturing

We want the Northwest to become the North American leader in clean manufacturing and production. Our vision is for the Northwest to embrace the circular economy and adapt and improve upon the ‘industrial symbiosis’ model. This will not only help industry reduce waste and pollution – but also spur job creation and economic development in the clean economy benefiting rural, suburban and urban communities throughout the Northwest. Clean manufacturing can also offer innovative transportation, energy, waste and water approaches that can lead to new sustainable infrastructure solutions.

New studies show that re-imagining manufacturing and production is a  helpful and important step to addressing climate change; the production of goods supplied into the global economy is a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

HOW WE'RE DOING IT

CSI is Identifying + Helping Potential Pilot Communities. We're working with communities across the Northwest to help identify the most promising Industrial Symbiosis sites and bring innovative ideas and partners to the table. Already, we're exploring opportunities with Spokane, Kennewick, Port Angeles, Centralia, Raymond, Goldendale, Tacoma, Portland and Tenino.

SEEDING PILOT COMMUNITIES

CSI is supporting a bipartisan (6 Democrats and 6 Republicans) coalition of Washington State legislators to collaborate on policies that can bring infrastructure excellence and jobs to communities throughout the state.  Following trips with i-SUSTAIN, funded by Scan Design Foundation, that CSI helped lead, bringing legislators to Kalundborg, Denmark, the initial pioneer of industrial symbiosis, Sen. Brown and Rep. Doglio, introduced legislation in 2019 to create an industrial symbiosis program. They secured funding for a $100,000 study to deliver the 2020 Legislature recommendations for standing up an industrial symbiosis initiative that can deliver good jobs in clean manufacturing throughout the state.

In September of 2019, a new bi-partisan group of Washington Legislators are going to Denmark for an in-depth study tour; once again funded by the Scan/Design Foundation with CSI and i-SUSTAIN teaming up.
