 Working with Klickitat County

A Small Hospital and School District Come Together.

Embracing a Bold Vision for a Healthy, Prosperous + Resilient Klickitat County future.

A RURAL COMMUNITY

INTERESTED IN MAKING TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENTS GO FURTHER.

Klickitat County prides itself on being an independent, efficient, resilient and ‘can do’ community.

The County is a renewable energy pioneer, bringing large-scale wind energy development to Washington State to grow economic opportunity and local jobs.

So they were interested in a pragmatic, better path forward to help them deal with tens of millions of dollars in hospital and school energy infrastructure needs.

Value Planning Process

THE PROBLEM

Both Klickitat Valley Hospital (KVH) and Goldendale School District (GSD) have an urgent need to improve heating, cooling, and electrical infrastructure at their facilities. Their aging systems are failing to safely and reliably meet the operational needs of the facilities. At KVH the estimated investments to address electrical and mechanical infrastructure deficiencies exceeds $10M. Additional energy infrastructure will be needed to support the hospital’s future new wing. GSD has an aging heating system at their high school that similarly requires renewal, with a capital budget also near $10M. Energy costs are also high due to the inefficiency of the existing infrastructure at both facilities, exceeding $500K annually.

EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH CSI'S INNOVATION LAB

CSI's Value Planning tour and workshop process brought community leaders and innovative thinkers to explore how KVH and GSD could be an anchor hub for a renewable energy district. Together we explored how this could offer a community scale solution to supply the energy needs for KVH, GSD and potentially other community partners in a more sustainable and efficient way.

NEXT STEPS

CSI's focusing on further developing Microgrid concepts and partners to help KVH and GSD create a resilient path forward.
