Systemic Approach to Clean Industry

In 2023, CSI helped our Danish friends at Kalundborg Symbiosis implement the SACI Project (Systemic Approach to Clean Industry) to train industrial symbiosis facilitators in the Americas and to expand this approach internationally.

The program was funded by the Danish Energy Agency and included a series of virtual trainings in the Spring for partners in the Pacific Northwest, Mexico (Jalisco), and Brazil (Rio de Janeiro).

These were followed by a week-long set of in-person trainings with Kalundborg Symbiosis in Denmark.

Then in October, CSI had the privilege of hosting our Danish and Brazilian friends in Washington & Oregon, in partnership with the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, Washington Department of Commerce, and Washington State Microenterprise Association.

In Portland, delegates discussed our progress over the last year and began working toward a cooperation agreement between partner organizations. We also toured facilities in the early stages of implementing industrial symbiosis, including Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant.

In Washington, the group visited Kennewick to attend the Northwest Bioenergy Summit and toured the Pasco Process Water Reuse Facility, soon to be one of our region's most advanced symbiosis projects featuring biogas production and algae systems that reduce nitrogen, clean wastewater and capture carbon.

Throughout the week we learned from our international partners about the work they are all doing back at home, including a talk about the Danish green transition from Claus Eckman, Climate and Energy Attache at the General Consulate of Denmark in California.
